Run through these steps before you send money, click a link, or share information. Print it and keep it near the phone or computer.

  1. Stop if the request is unexpected, urgent, or asks you to keep it secret.
  2. Do not use links or phone numbers supplied in the call, text or email.
  3. Contact the organization yourself using its official website, app, or the number on your card or statement.
  4. Never share passwords, one-time codes, or remote access to your computer.
  5. Treat any request to pay by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or payment app as a red flag.
  6. Confirm any change in payment or bank instructions using a contact method you already trust.
  7. Talk to someone you trust before making an unusual or large payment.
  8. Report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and tell your bank right away if you paid.
